What inspired you to start teaching tai chi?
I was involved in boxing and wrestling while in school and took Tae Kwon Do in college. Some friends shared their Tai Ji Quan knowledge with me, informally.
I then sought out formal instruction at the Aspen Academy of Martial Arts.
I started a club at WSU and brought the dean of the academy, Marshall Ho'o, to Wichita on 4 occasions to hold lectures and workshops.
Master Ho'o gave me permission to teach his form in 1982.
How would you describe your teaching style in three words?
I teach with patience, humor and clarity.
What can people expect when they take your class?
We start with loosening and relaxing our bodies to better perceive how to move.
Parts of the warmup are combined as we coordinate the upper and lower body.
Individual moves are linked in continuous "walks" to gain familiarity and ability before the choreography is introduced.
What brings you JOY?
I really enjoy helping people find the "Aha" Moments when things come to together and the movements bring joy.
